FALL / WINTER 2004 NEWSLETTER

As we begin our third year at Montpelier Plantation Inn, we wanted to find a way to share news from Nevis with you - that might just be more reliable than the ol' coconut telegraph.  We think we have found it in the form of an online newsletter.  We hope you find it interesting and that it brings back fond memories of your time spent with us.

We look forward to seeing you again before long.

Summer Time

During our annual summer closing we decided to continue spreading some of the new Montpelier style into the rooms and common areas.

When you are away from home there are a few creature comforts that we thought would make your stay more enjoyable.  In the guestrooms we have added a desk so that you can write with ease whenever you are inspired.  We've also added custom built vanity and closets in mahogany and cedar.  There are now mini refrigerators, carefully concealed, in each room.  And whilst we find that some guests are happy to get up with the roosters some do like a long lie-in.  So we have added blackout blinds in the rooms.  And in case that wasn't enough - we now have air-conditioning in eight rooms.  We are completely confident that a perfect night's sleep is waiting for you at Montpelier.

The beach cricket is still one of our favorite events- even though Calypso is still no better at retrieving.  On your next visit to Montpelier by the Sea you will discover an island cottage that has been relocated from cotton ground village.  These houses are unique and are in need of being preserved.  We have converted this cottage to a drinks area and extended the porch for covered dining.  Now that we've installed electricity at the beach we will now be able to offer evening beachside gatherings.  Perhaps even midnight beach cricket?

RELAX.......

We know that our guests don't usually have any difficulty in relaxing.  But occasionally it's possible to find a few new ways to fill a leisurely day.  We have expanded our Library of books, sounds and images.  If you decide that being read to might make your relaxation even more complete we've found just the answer.  We now have a Recorded Book Library and individual disc players are available for guests to use during their stay.  We know that a shady vista that captures the gentle tradewinds is really one of the treasures of Nevis.  So we have built a Reading Gazebo that gives breathtaking views of the old sugar fields and the distant sea.  It has been noted though, that the Reading Gazebo is also a good spot for an afternoon siesta.  Individual CD players cannot only be transported anywhere but they can transport you anywhere and guests are free to use the Montpelier audio books CD collection.  The final addition is our Video Library has grown to include the latest range of DVD films on release.  The 36 inch Sony screen is perfect for watching films on a rainy day or perhaps a quiet movie night with the sound of frogs croaking, giving new meaning to stereo sound.

From the Kitchen

Mark, as head chef, is constantly working with the whole kitchen to enhance the dining experience.  Recently we developed a new luncheon menu that has been very well received by guests, as well as added a new espresso machine ensuring that coffee lovers can indulge their passion even while on holiday.  Nevis is renowned for a sudden rainburst and while they are often great fun we found that at dinner time they can cause problems.  We won't have to risk canceling a special evening in the Mill since we have added a carefully concealed waterproof cover

Montpelier Family News

Much has happened in our family over the past few months and we wanted to share some of this exciting news with you.

  • Timothy and Meredith had a baby boy on March 30, 2004.  Kyler Lincoln is the darling of all the staff and has found a special place for himself under the watchful eye of the Laundry staff.
  • Tonya has moved back to London and is in the final stages of completing her Doctorate in Education from Columbia University.
  • On a sadder note, Jim, Mr. Millers donkey, passed away from bee stings.  However, Coco, Montpeliers very friendly two-year-old resident donkey can be seen carrying Kyler around on his back from time to time.

Read All About It

Although we are still one of the Caribbean's best kept secrets, recently Montpelier has appeared in a number of high profile magazines.  Most notably the hotel was featured in the October 2004 issue of Architectural Digest. Citing its "wow factor" the six page spread highlights the best of Montpelier with a number of wonderful photos including one of Calypso and Rudder sitting by the entrance to the Great Room, still wishing they could come in. The October issue of Caribbean Travel & Life declares Montpelier "a romantic island rendezvous that has a sensuous sophistication that expresses itself in every detail", and that "at the hotel romance is more than mere style...it [is] heightened by the feeling of being a cherished guest in someone's home".

It's that time of year again.  Just wanted to let you know that voting is open for Caribbean Travel & Life's annual "Best of the Caribbean" Reader's Choice Poll. With a more than active hurricane season this year, creating fond memories of the Caribbean is even more important. You have until February 28, 2005 to vote for your favorite Caribbean experience and you don't have to be a subscriber of the magazine to vote.  http://www.caribbeantravelmag.com/bestof/index.jsp

We very much appreciate the wonderful write-ups in the magazines.  But what we like most of all is seeing very special guests return each year. We look forward to seeing you before long.

Best,

The Hoffman's
