And... The Book of the Month
The Moon Always Rising: A Novel by Alice C. Early - Cultural Heritage Fiction
MOON is set partly in the Scottish Highlands and mostly in Nevis. It’s the story of Eleanor Els” Gordon, a young Scottish woman who loses everything that matters to her (some by her own impulse), visits Nevis on a forced vacation to try to pull her crumbling self together, and becomes obsessed with owning a derelict plantation house she finds there. After sinking her savings into restoring the house and garden and moving in, she finds she’s co-habiting with the jumbie of the former owner, Jack Griggs. He can’t leave this world without her help and she can’t figure out how to live in it without his. She helps him make amends for his treatment of the two women he most loved in life. He nudges her to find out, finally, why her mother abandoned her at two and fled back to her native Italy. Once Els lures her mother to Nevis, sparks of all kinds fly. Among the novel’s themes are the power of forgiveness, giving us a redemption story in an immersive setting. Readers and reviewers seem to be responding enthusiastically to this page-turner that offers a Caribbean escape from the dreariness of our situation.
